Foot & Ankle Correction &
Injury Prevention for Dancers
For all dancer feet ages 10+
I had always dreamed of dancing en pointe, but my flat feet seemed to stand in my way. I would do anything to 'fix my feet,' including using foot stretchers, forcing them under couches, and using specialized bands. Fortunately, I moved away from harsh, outdated, and harmful techniques for improving ballet feet and embraced safer, more effective methods.
My flat feet didn't stop me.
As a teen dancer, I was unaware that there are different types of arches, and that once you have a specific bone structure (flat rigid, flexible flat foot, or high arch), it cannot be changed like popular hacks lead you to believe!
Teens tend to think they're invincible and if it does not hurt immediately, it will be okay. Unfortunately, I was wrong. At 33 years old, I have had surgery that is likely a result of poor practices I embraced as a teenager.
Even though I practiced dangerous methods to achieve ballerina feet, I was fortunately redirected to the importance of strength training by my physical therapists in college.
This was when I stopped experiencing foot pain, my pointe work improved, and my confidence along with it.
As dancers, we can improve our feet, increase our chances of dancing en pointe, and prevent lower extremity injuries by focusing on safe strength and mobility exercises.
